Take a look at this wall...!
This was a wall at a home I inspected today... The wall is leaning over and about to fall due to over saturation and loose soil conditions at the base of the wall. There is no drain to take all the excess settling water away from the walls base. To prevent a problem like this, you would want to put in a perforated pipe underground and direct the settling water past the houses foundation and into the street. |

Useful Tips
Aluminum Wiring Due to implications in numerous house fires, the once common practice of using aluminum wiring during the 1970's is no longer permitted in new installations in most jurisdictions. If your house has aluminum wiring you do not necessarily need to panic. Aluminum wiring can be just as safe as copper wire as long as it has been installed correctly. The concern with aluminum wiring is that it is very unforgiving if it has been installed incorrectly. Aluminum wiring expands when it warms up, and contracts then it cools down. Aluminum reacts differently than copper wire after several warm/cooling cycles. After each cycle aluminum tends to lose more of its tightness. This process is often referred to as "cold creep". Combined with aluminum's tendency to oxidize when in contact with certain metals, these factors can lead to dangerous problems. When aluminum oxidizes it heats up more to conduct the same amount of electricity, which then causes more oxidation. Due to this cycle, eventually the wires may start to get very hot, melt the fixture that it attached to, and even possibly cause a fire. If you are considering purchasing a home with aluminum wiring, or have discovered it later, it would be a good idea to hire a licensed electrician or inspector to check over the wiring for any potential problems. |

What you don't want to see when you have a retaining wall!!
Notice the small white pipe coming out of the wall? That is a drain pipe! This pipe should run out past the house and maybe into the street. The pipe you see here is not attached, so when it rains or a lot of water settles at the top of the wall, the water will drain out of that pipe and run into and possibly flood the back of your house and or penetrate into your wall cavities in your house from a crack in foundation. What to look for when living near the ocean.....
This is a picture of a rear deck in Huntington Harbor. If you look closely you will see extensive warping along the edge of the deck. A great way to prevent this from happening is to: 1- try keeping the deck in the shade some how during the summer. 2- If you have a wood deck, keep a good coat of stain or paint on the surface and cracks.
